Prayer for Liberation from the Devil (Poema Historica, de se ipso; PG 37, 1280)
Deliver me, deliver me, O immortal God, from the foreign hand; that I may not be tried by evil deeds and that the pharaoh does not torment me. Do not let me fall into the nets, O Christ, of Your adversary; that he may not lead me into the dark Babylon, all covered with wounds. Permit me to remain in Your vestibule and to sing praises at Your feet. Let not the fire of Sodom fall like rain upon my head. Protect me under Your powerful mantle; distance from me all misfortune. Woe to me, Christ, the dragon has returned. Woe to me, he multiplies his fury. Woe to me, I have tasted the tree of knowledge. Woe to me, the jealous one has inspired me with thoughts of jealousy. I have nothing divine, and I am chased from paradise. O sword, mitigate a bit your burning flame. Open again the Garden of Eden, as the Crucified Christ did so for the thief. Amen.
