Erie Catholic Bishop Trautman headed for meeting with Pope

Staff report, Erie Times-News

Erie Catholic Bishop Donald W. Trautman is headed to the Vatican for a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI.

Trautman was flying out of Erie today for his "ad limina" visit, a periodic trip he said all bishops are required to make.

"It's a pastoral visit," Trautman said this morning before boarding a plane at Erie International Airport.

The leader of the Catholic Diocese of Erie said he expects to meet Pope Benedict in a group with four or five other bishops. Trautman said he'll share information about the life of the Catholic Church in the Erie-based diocese and answer any of the pontiff's questions.

The date for the visit hasn't been determined yet. Trautman is due to return to Erie on Dec. 11.

This is his fourth such visit to Rome since becoming bishop of the Erie diocese. The previous meetings were with Pope John Paul II.

PLEASE accept his resignation so Erie can get back to being Catholic like it once was.

He turned 75 in July and Erie is still waiting for his replacement.  All the while he crucifies Tradition and anyone who wants to celebrate the TLM there.

Please retire him HF.

Erie bishop ill, hospitalized in Rome for tests

By VALERIE MYERS, Erie Times-News

Erie Catholic Bishop Donald W. Trautman has been hospitalized in Rome and has not been able to meet with Pope Benedict XVI.

The bishop became ill after arriving in Rome earlier this week and did not feel well enough to meet with the pope as scheduled Thursday, Monsignor Robert J. Smith, the diocese vicar general, said in a prepared statement today.

The bishop was hospitalized for tests and expects to meet with the pope next week, Smith said.

God forgive me, but all sorts of thoughts went through my head when I heard that he got sick soon after arriving, esp. the timing of it all.

Erie bishop recovering from dehydration, infection during trip to Rome

By DAVID BRUCE, Erie Times-News

Erie Catholic Bishop Donald W. Trautman felt well enough today to meet with Pope Benedict XVI and celebrate Mass in Rome with other bishops from Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Trautman, 75, was hospitalized Friday for dehydration and an infection he suffered shortly after arriving in Rome last week to meet with the pope.

He was discharged from a Rome hospital Sunday, said the Rev. Christopher Singer, chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Erie.

"Bishop Trautman was able to meet with the Holy Father this morning, though we don't know any of the results of that meeting," Singer said. "He met the Holy Father with a group of bishops from New Jersey, because he missed the meeting with Pennsylvania bishops due to his hospitalization."

Singer could not say what type of treatments Trautman had while hospitalized.

"Obviously it was nothing serious," Singer said.

Trautman went to Rome for a visit that bishops are periodically required to make to the Vatican. It is his fourth -- and final -- ad limina visit.
