Churches to sign historic baptism agreement in Austin

Leaders of U.S. Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches will sign a historic agreement Tuesday in Austin by which the two traditions will formally recognize each other’s liturgical rites of baptism.

Representatives of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Christian Reformed Church in North America, Reformed Church in America and United Church of Christ will sign the document.

Bishop Joe Vásquez of the Catholic Diocese of Austin says the mutual recognition of baptism is a response to Jesus’ prayer that ‘we may all be one.’

“This ecumenical effort, this mutual recognition of baptism, is part of our response to Jesus’ prayer that ‘we may all be one,’ ” said Bishop Joe Vásquez of the Catholic Diocese of Austin.

Before the agreement, Protestant denominations of the Reformed Church tradition normally accepted Catholic baptisms, but the Catholic church did not always accept theirs, said the Rev. Tom Weinandy of the Catholic bishops conference in Washington.
Weinandy, who participated in the discussions that led to the agreement, said Catholics questioned the validity of baptisms if they did not invoke the names of the Trinity.

The document to be signed Tuesday says, “For our baptisms to be mutually recognized, water and the scriptural Trinitarian formula “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28: 19-20) must be used in the baptismal rite.”

But I thought the Catholic Church accepted most Prot baptisms already, and converts just had to say the POF?

Yes but this gesture of "goodwill" gives the implicit if not explicit indication from the Catholic Church that to be baptized Prot. or whatever is a good thing.  That being a member of the Catholic Church is not necessary to salvation.  At least that is how I see it.

How can the Catholic Church say that the baptisms of these denominations were before questionable and perhaps invalid but now they grant a sweeping acceptance?

It makes no sense.

Although I absolutely agree with all the previous comments, I just can't help but wonder if there is also a grain of good in this story. If only one more soul, baptized correctly, responds to the Grace conferred by the Sacrament and then becomes a (Traditional) Catholic and thereby saves his soul, this is something to at least be pleased about.

Of course, and I repeat, I agree whole heartedly with the previous comments.

Yes but such an occasion would constitute a conversion to Catholicism.  Conversions to Catholicism are no longer necessary to to save ones soul according to the new novus ordo's idea of God.

Besides these so called baptism have been labeled invalid prior to this sweeping acceptance.  An acceptance of them now doesn't make them valid.  So how many of these souls will think they are validly baptized and die that way?

This is just another dangerous game the nordo's play with people's souls all in the name of "ecumenism".

And I'm not arguing against the points you make D. I wholeheartedly agree. I'm just pointing out that according to the final paragraph of the original post, if only one more soul converts to become a Traditional Catholic and thereby saves his soul, that is something pleasing to God.

I repeat that I agree with you! This e umania is disturbing, to understate entirely. But if only one soul responds to that Grace in a valid baptism....!!!!

And will the bishop oversee these supposedly "valid" baptisms? Aren't baptisms by the laity only in case of emergency?

There ministers are not recognized by the Church as "ministers"...so they are lay people! More confusion!!!
