RICHMOND, Virginia, Jan. 11, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Virginia’s strongly pro-life Attorney General is urging citizens to be ready to go to jail as a protest against the Obama administration’s HHS mandate.
Ken Cuccinelli, who is running for governor in 2013, told Iowa radio host Steve Deace on Wednesday that civil disobedience would expose the “tyranny” behind the mandate.
“My local bishop said he told a group, ‘Well, you know, I told a group I’m ready to go to jail,’ and I told him, ‘Bishop, don’t take this personally - you need to go to jail,” said Cuccinelli.
If citizens were jailed, the official continued, it would “provide an example of what tyranny means when it’s played to its logical conclusion.”
“Abraham Lincoln has many good quotes, but one of them is ‘The best way to get rid of a bad law is to enforce it vigorously,’” he added.
Predictably, abortion advocates slammed the comments. Democratic state Sen. Mark Herring, who is running for Attorney General in 2013, said, “For Virginia’s chief legal officer to suggest that citizens break the law is not only reckless, it’s dangerous.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia tweeted: “Ken Cuccinelli thinks ppl (people) should go to jail to oppose better access to birth control. And he wants to be our Gov?!”
Cuccinelli’s comments came as craft supplier Hobby Lobby has faced fines up to $1.3 million per day since the mandate came into force for them Jan. 1st.
The Christian-run company announced they would defy the mandate, which forces company’s to cover abortion-inducing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilizations, after Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor denied their emergency appeal for a temporary reprieve.
The mandate faces over 40 separate lawsuits.

It's really something that it's come to this. I heard that the Myans sacrificed some 50,000 people a year in their pagan rituals. We make them look good by comparison.
Somehow I feel like we are close to a tipping point in this country. Between the gun control power grab and the continued sins of abortion and "legalized" sodomy, I feel like I am waiting for a shoe to drop.
It really is something though, when a state attorney general is urging people to break the law. Never thought it would come to this. :-p
Thank you for starting up the newest 54 day rosary novena, which will cover most of Lent. I think it will be sorely needed, for only Our Heavenly Queen can help us out of this mess. The politicos keep digging us deeper into the mud.
I feel like I am waiting for a shoe to drop.
Indeed! or a comet!
U.S. bishops say they’re willing to ‘go to jail’ over HHS mandate
WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 29, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com ) - As the Obama administration and the U.S. Bishops remain locked in battle over the HHS mandate, the question on the minds of many observers is: what lengths are the bishops willing to go to to oppose the mandate?
"I would be willing to go to jail in defense of religious liberty,” said Bishop Alexander Sample of Marquette, Michigan, who was appointed Archbishop of Portland, Oregon on Jan. 29th.
He stressed that the bishops are exploring all of the options with the assistance of “sound moral theologians” to “see what is the most practical but effective way to oppose the mandate.”
“We will not simply roll over and accept the mandate,” he insisted. “We have to fight for our religious liberty and we'll take it as far as we can."
Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh also said he is willing to go to jail if need be. "We can't compromise on the principles,” he told LifeSiteNews.
If it gets rough “all we have to do is look back at our history. Take a look at the saints who defended our faith and that's what it's about,” he said.
Bishop Zubik explained that he has been praying for "a conversion of heart on behalf of our president," but said “if that doesn't happen then I think it's imperative that I accept the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”
