St Gregory Thaumaturgus, feast day November 17

St Gregory was bishop of Neocaesarea in Asia Minor and was famous for the holiness of his life and his wisdom, but even more so for the numerous miracles which he wrought. Even during his lifetime he was known as “Thaumaturgus”, the wonderworker. His faith was one of the sort that “can move mountains”. As a disciple of the great Origen he defended the doctrine of the Church against the heretical Paul of Samosata. He suffered greatly in the persecution of Decidus and then from the barbarian invasion. He died between 270 or 275, after thirty years as a bishop.

PRAYER:
O holy Saint Gregory, confessor and priest of the Lord, I pray thee that thou wouldst intercede with our Lord God for me, that, being purified from all vice, I may please Him in all things, and that He will grant me the peace possessed by all His servants.
Amen.

More of St. Gregory:
Through his prayer, he moved a mountain that prevented the construction of a church. He dried a lake that was the cause of dissension between two brothers. He stopped the flooding of the Icus River that was devastating the fields by planting his staff along the border of the river. His staff took root, and was transformed into a great tree beyond whose limits the water would not pass. ...

...

St. Gregory was an anti-ecumenical saint. On his death bed, when someone told him there were only 17 heretics in his diocese, he was exultant, because when he first became the Bishop of Neoceasarea, there were only 17 Catholics. He had completely reversed the situation. It was his way to say to God: “I have fulfilled my mission.”
