Canticle Nunc dimittis
Ant. Protect us, * Lord, while we are awake and safeguard us while we sleep; that we may keep watch with Christ, and rest in peace.
(Canticle of Simeon * Luke 2:29-32)
2:29 Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, ✠ * according to thy word in peace;
2:30 Because my eyes have seen * thy salvation,
2:31 Which thou hast prepared * before the face of all peoples:
2:32 A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, * and the glory of thy people Israel.
V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Ghost.
R. As it was in the beginning, is now, * and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Ant. Protect us, * Lord, while we are awake and safeguard us while we sleep;
that we may keep watch with Christ, and rest in peace.
Amen.
May the pleading of blessed John the Abbot make us acceptable unto thee, O Lord, we pray; that what we may not have through any merits of ours, we may gain by means of his patronage.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.

O most merciful God, Who didst ennoble the blessed Queen Elizabeth with divers excellent graces, and withal with a gift of stilling the tempest of war, grant unto us through her pleading, in this dying life that peace for which we humbly pray, and hereafter to attain unto everlasting joy in thy Presence.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.

O God, who enabled blessed Irenaeus thy Martyr, and Bishop, to overcome heresy by the truth of his teaching, and happily to establish peace in the Church, give to thy people, we pray, steadfastness in holy religion, and grant us thy peace in our days.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.
Let us pray.
Grant, O Lord, we beseech thee, unto all thy servants, the gift of thine heavenly grace, that even as the Blessed Virgin being made a Mother hath been unto them the first step unto their salvation, so the godly and solemn memorial of her Visitation may be the bringer of an increase of peace.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
R. Amen.
Hymn
With glad and joyous strains now let each street resound,
And let the laurel wreath each Christian brow entwine;
With torches waving bright, let old and young go forth,
And swell the train in solemn line.
Whilst we with bitter tears, with sighs and grief profound,
Wail o'er the saving blood, poured forth upon the tree,
Oh, deeply let us muse, and count the heavy price,
Which Christ hath paid to make us free.
The primal man of old, who fell by serpent's guile,
Brought death and many woes upon his fallen race;
But our new Adam, Christ, new life unto us gave,
And brought to all ne'er-ending grace.
To heaven's highest height, the wailing cry went up
Of him, who hung in pain, God's own eternal Son;
His saving, priceless blood, his Father's wrath appeased,
And for his sons full pardon won.
Whoe'er in that pure blood his guilty soul shall wash,
Shall from his stains be freed—be made as roses bright—
Shall vie with angels pure, shall please his King and Lord,
And precious shine in his glad sight.
Oh, from the path of right ne'er let thy steps depart,
But haste thee to the goal in virtue's peaceful ways;
thy God who reigns on high will e'er direct thy steps,
And crown thy deeds with blissful days.
Father of all things made, to us propitious be,
For whom thy own dear Son, his saving blood did spill;
O Holy Spirit, grant the souls by thee refreshed
Eternal bliss may ever fill.
Amen.
V. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants.
R. Whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood.
Amen.

Hymn
O for thy spirit, holy John, to chasten
Lips sin-polluted, fettered tongues to loosen;
So by thy children might thy deeds of wonder
Meetly be chanted.
Lo! a swift herald, from the skies descending,
Bears to thy father promise of thy greatness;
How he shall name thee, what thy future story,
Duly revealing.
Scarcely believing message so transcendent,
Him for season power of speech forsaketh,
Till, at thy wondrous birth, again returneth
Voice to the voiceless.
Thou, in thy mother's womb all darkly cradled,
Knewest thy Monarch, biding in his chamber,
Whence the two parents, through their children's merits,
Mysteries uttered.
Praise to the Father, to the Son begotten,
And to the Spirit, equal power possessing,
One God whose glory, through the lapse of ages,
Ever resoundeth.
Amen.
V. There was a man sent from God.
R. Whose name was John.
From the Vespers of today.
Amen.
...
Be there one, or crowds surrounding,
He is equally abounding,
Nor, though eaten, ever spent.
Both to good and bad ‘tis broken,
But on each a different token
or of life, or death attends:
Life to good, to bad damnation;
Lo, of one same manducation
How dissimilar the ends.
When the priest the victim breaketh,
See thy faith in no wise shaketh,
Know that every fragment taketh
All that ‘neath the whole there lies:
This in Him no fracture maketh,
‘Tis the figure only breaketh,
Form, or state, no change there taketh
Place in what it signifies.
Bread, that angels eat in heaven,
Now becomes the pilgrim’s leaven,
Bread in truth to children given,
That must ne’er to dogs be thrown.
He, in ancient types disguised,
Was the Isaac sacrificed,
For the feast a lamb devised,
Manna to the Fathers shown.
Bread, whose shepherd-care doth tend us,
Jesu Christ, Thy mercy send us,
Do Thou feed us, Thou defend us,
Lead us where true joys attend us,
In the land where life is given:
Thou all ken and might possessing,
Mercies aye to us largessing,
Make us share Thy cup of blessing,
Heritage and love’s caressing
With the denizens of heaven.
Amen. Alleluia.
Amen.
