The Holy Name of Mary
Feast Day Tomorrow - September 12th

This feast was originally instituted by Innocent XI in memory of the great victory won over the Turks before the walls of Vienna on September 13th, 1683. At the beginning of the last century, it was fixed for this [tomorrow’s] date under Pope Saint Pius X. Initially, Pope Innocent XII had ordered that it should be kept annually on the Sunday within the Octave of the Nativity of Our Lady.

Whatever interpretation of the holy name of Mary we may accept, whether it means bitterness, lady, star, sea, or beloved of God, her holy name justly deserves our highest veneration. It is the name which was first on the lips of the divine Child, the name of our Mother in heaven, and the name which after that of Jesus holds all our hope of salvation. Many saints, especially Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, recognize in the most sweet name of Mary the virtues and prerogatives which the Doctors of the Church find in the name of our Savior: such as light, strength, sweetness and protection. Therefore, the devout Catholic desires above all things to pronounce the holy names of Jesus and Mary with their last breath before going forth to behold the sacred countenances of our King and Queen. Pope Saint Pius X granted great indulgences to those who should make use of this pious invocation.
– The Roman Missal

Invoke the name of Mary frequently; especially throughout the day of tomorrow’s feast. Pray the Ave Maria three times in reparation for all the blasphemies uttered against the holy Mother of God. Perform some act of kindness in honor of our Blessed Lady.
