His Eminence Jose Cardinal Sanchez, one of the six Filipino cardinals since the papacy of John XXIII, passed away early morning Friday.
Sanchez, Archbishop Emeritus of Nueva Segovia, died at the age of 91. He would have turned 92 on March 17.
He was born in Catanduanes and has served the Church since his ordination as a priest in 1946, according to the statement of Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte.
Prior to his death, Cardinal Sanchez served as Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in the Roman Curia from 1985 to 1991, and was the first Filipino to have served in different capacities in the Holy See.
He was then made Cardinal of San Pio V a Villa Carpegne in 1991 and was subsequently appointed as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy as well as President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.
“The loss of Cardinal Sanchez will be deeply felt by the Catholic Church the world over,” Valte said.
He was the fifth Filipino named to the College of Cardinals after Archbishop Rufino Jiao Cardinal Santos of Manila (March 28, 1960), Archbishop Julio Ras Cardinal Rosales of Cebu (April 28, 1969), Archbishop Jaime L. Sin of Manila (May 24, 1976) and Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu Ricardo Jamin Vidal (May 25, 1985).
