French cardinal says dialogue effort with SSPX has gone as far as it can

The fundamental discord between the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) and the Vatican is "on the record" and Pope Benedict XVI will offer no more concessions to the society, Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, Archbishop of Bordeaux and member of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, said in Rome last week.

Commenting on remarks by SSPX leader Bishop Bernard Fellay that the society will not reconsider its rejection of key aspects of the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Ricard said the Pope "has done the maximum" to bring the two sides together.

"They reject the Council but also say no to the teaching of successive popes from John XXIII to Benedict XVI, to the Catechism of the Church and to the Code of Canon Law," he told the French news agency AFP.
