Vatican II: will the debate take place?

9-12-2011

Is this the start of a response to the Petition dated September 24, 2011, addressed to Pope Benedict XVI by more than 80 Italian Catholic intellectuals, in favor of a “more in-depth examination of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council”?  Is it finally the beginning of the debate that Msgr. Brunero Gherardini, former professor of Ecclesiology at the Pontifical Lateran University and dean of the Italian theologians, called for in 2009 in his book, The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council: a much-needed debate, to which he recently had to write a sequel entitled A debate that has not taken place?

In any case, on December 2 L’Osservatore Romano published an article by Msgr. Fernando Ocariz, a member of Opus Dei and one of the Roman experts during the doctrinal discussions between the Holy See and the Society of St. Pius X, beneath the headline: “On adherence to the Second Vatican Council on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its convocation”.

Without prejudging any future sequel that may appear, DICI recommends that its readers compare the arguments of Msgr. Ocariz and those of Msgr. Gherardini, while hoping that this theological disputatio can take place and that it might make possible “a sure and objective evaluation of Vatican II”.
