This just opened up this morning. My explanation from last year:

2016 Patron Saint of the Year

I've done this for several years.  One requests a saint, and the website owner randomly picks a saint for each and everyone who requests one.  You can request one for yourself or one saint for each of the members of your family.  Sometime around  the 1st of January it starts, and I think the drawing continues until mid January.  As it goes, the saint "picks" you.  This saint can be researched by the requestor, prayed to, etc., for the year.  It is a way to get to know the many saints of our Church, especially those who aren't as well known.   The site owner likes to know how it went during the year and if any one had prayers answered (and the like) in regards to their saint.  There has been some interesting stories over the years. It is an interesting endeavor and those who participate look forward to receiving the name of their saint who "picked" them.   It is no different than a mom or dad of a family, putting names of saints in a hat for their children to pick and study/pray to for the coming year.   Once you receive the name of your saint, it is up to you on how much you want to find out about him/her, etc.

Quite interesting..............thank you for this information.

So, if we're interested in having a saint pick us for the year, do we just post a reply here that says "I'm in" or something of the sort, or do we PM someone, or how exactly does that part of it work?

You have to go to the link Susan provided.  We don't have anything to do with it. The thing is you have to submit your request before Christmas Day so for this year it is too late. :(

David, you may still be able to get on board with this?  The gentleman who runs this is picking names on the Octave of Christmas.  You can email him and ask; I think his contact info is on his site.  It's worth a try.  I think other years he's had late comers join in, if names are available.

I went on his website, and it looks as if it's still open. Thanks!

This year I received Blessed Margaret of Savoy.  She was a widow who became a Third Order Dominican and a follower of St. Vincent Ferrer.

I received St. Peter Celestine, who was the first pope to resign (1294). He was a hermit who had been elected after there had been no pope for 3 years. He had no idea that his name was even being considered -- one day a bunch of bishops and cardinals and priests and excited laymen just showed up at his cell and broke the news to him. He prayed about it and figured it must be God's will, so he accepted the election, and was thrust right into the middle of medieval political intrigues that he was in no way prepared to handle. After making a mess of things for 5 months he resigned, and then was imprisoned by his successor (Pope Boniface VIII) who wanted to make certain that no opposing political faction could use him for their ends. He died imprisoned.

I have St Hugh of Noara - He was the first abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Noara (Sicily)
