Event Description

St. Gabriel Possenti (1838 - 1862) was an Italian Passionist brother.  He is known as St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows as that was his religious name.  This novena is especially for our children and grandchildren, who face such temptation in today's world.  St. Gabriel faced similar circumstances in the war torn Italy of his time.  May he inspire us with devotion to Our Sorrowful Mother (especially with Lent coming up) and may he intercede for us all.

O good St. Gabriel, God inspired thee to see the Passion of Jesus as it was reflected in the heart of Mary.  By her side, thou did stand beneath the Cross of Jesus, gazing on Him and learning the meaning of love.  O St. Gabriel, we wish, like thee, to grow in love of God and all His faithful.  Remember us in our trials, especially those who are young....

(here mention your request).

Support us by thy prayers all our days.  And when this life is done, may we join thee in Heaven in the joyful company of Jesus and Mary.  We humbly ask for the grace of a happy death.  +Amen

O St. Gabriel of our Lady of Sorrows, obtain for our young people the grace of following Jesus with generosity.  May they place the gospel at the very heart of their lives.  May they desire to love God wholeheartedly as thou did.  May they especially obtain a true devotion to the Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart of Mary, and following thy example may we all increase in grace.  Pray for us that we will be saints,  so we may know the peace and joy of eternal life in Heaven.

+Amen+

Holy St Gabriel, defend our families and children from the marauding bands of Satan's minions and brigands who seek to steal the treasure of innocence from our Catholic youth! (thanks Cathleen)

St. Gabriel was a bit tougher than you may think......

"A frightening rumor circulated that a band of marauders were heading towards Isola, and many families rushed in panic into the backwoods, leaving few in town......for the few who remained in Isola the next few hours were a nightmare.  The soldiers looted without opposition, running off the local militia who were hopelessly outnumbered.  At the thought of the injustice, anger flared in Gabriel, dispelling any fear which he might have felt.  After requesting permission to see if he could help, he ran toward the town.

About twenty men were ransacking the town.  They were drunk and abusive, and had begun to burn some of the houses.

A soldier, dragging an unwilling girl, saw Gabriel and stepped into the road directly in his path with a sneering remark about such a young monk being all alone.  Quickly, Gabriel took the man's pistol out of his holster and threatened to shoot if the man moved or failed to release the girl.  Seeing a second soldier, Gabriel shouted a command for him to drop his gun, which the surprised soldier did.  Well armed, all of Gabriel's hunting training came back to him.  The shouts of his captives had brought the rest of the company  to see the scene, although seeing an armed monk, they slowed to a walk in their approach.  When all were gathered, Gabriel demanded their disarmament.

Their leader....made a sarcastic comment about a single little monk thinking he could stop a whole company.  Just then a lizard darted into the street and paused a moment.  Gabriel barely took aim before he fired and the lizard flopped over dead.

Pointing the second revolver at the sergeant, Gabriel repeated his command for the company to drop their arms.  His display of marksmanship had impressed the cowardly crew, and they disarmed immediately.  Gabriel made them empty their pockets and drop the loot they had collected.  Holding their sergeant hostage, he forced them to put out three fires they had started.  Finally marching the whole company ahead of him, he made them leave town."
