On December 15, 2016 the Polish Parliament passed a resolution recognizing the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Poland.

Within weeks of the Polish Catholic Church -- in the presence of civil authorities -- crowning Jesus Christ the King of Poland, the Polish Parliament passed a resolution recognizing Our Lady as Queen of Poland. The recognition is directed toward the 300th anniversary of the ecclesiastical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, which took place under the hand of Pope Clement XI on September 8, 1717. Additional coronations also took place under Pope St. Pius X in 1910 and John Paul II in 2005. Moreover, the first secular coronation of the image occurred in 1652, when King John II Casimir declared of the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa as Protectress of Poland.

Here is an excerpt from the Polish Parliament's resolution, as provided by Catholic News Agency:

"Polish Sejm [Parliament], convinced of the special importance of Marian devotion for our homeland – not only in the religious aspect, but also social, cultural and patriotic – establishes 2017 the Year of the 300th anniversary of the Coronation of the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa[.]"

The article goes on to discuss other pious actions that are being taken in 2017, a Jubilee Year for the Polish nation.

For the Jubilee, the Polish bishops’ conference has created a free smartphone app that sends out a “Marian thought” every day just before 9pm, the hour of the “Jasna Góra Appeal,” a special prayer for the intercession of Our Lady prayed by Poles.

Faithful are also encouraged to participate in the Jubilee by offering “spiritual gifts” to Mary, such as a commitment to say certain prayers, to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or to give up an addiction, such as drugs or pornography.

To inaugurate the Jubilee Year, Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki of Poznan said Mass Sept. 8, 2016 at the Jasna Góra Monastery, the shrine where the image is located. On a website dedicated to the anniversary, there is a countdown to the celebrations to take place Aug. 26, the feast day of the image.

Fr. Marian Waligóra, prior of the monastery, said the resolution of the Senate and Sejm recognizes “the achievements of this place in the history of the whole of our land, the importance of Jasna Góra as a place in our history and religious center for the whole Church and all Catholics,” the Polish Catholic News Agency KAI reported.

The resolution adds a “luster” to the Jubilee, Fr. Waligóra said, because it reminds them that the importance of Our Lady of Czestochowa goes beyond merely religious or spiritual importance to Poles – although that is the most important aspect – but that the image of Our Lady is woven into the entire history of Poland."

As noted, the official recognition of Our Lady of Czestochowa as Queen of Poland goes hand-in-hand with the Catholic bishops of Poland officially recognizing Christ as King of Poland. These declarations follow two other recent acts of national consecration. First, on October 21, 2016 President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski of Peru consecrated his country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary during a national prayer breakfast. Then, two days later, Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk, at a ceremony held at Fatima, consecrated Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

It is to be hoped that additional national acts of consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary and Her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, will occur in the coming year as the Church honors the centenary of Our Lady's apparitions at Fatima.

Poland had long ago been consecrated to Our Lady of Czestochowa, but it's nice to see that once again the secular authorities recognize her (esp. after the long years of Communism and its aftereffects)

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.

Amen!
