benoitXVI_jeune On June 29, 2011, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the 60th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Benedict XVI will be celebrated.  For this reason the Congregation for the Clergy is inviting Catholics throughout the world to participate in 60 hours of Eucharistic prayer for vocations and the sanctification of the clergy.

Bavarians did not wait until that day to celebrate “their pope”, the news agency Rome Reports noted on June 13, the day of a parade in traditional Bavarian costumes with fanfares, horses and carriages on St. Peter’s Square.  On horse-drawn floats there were scale models of the red cathedral in Munich and the one in Friesing (where Joseph Ratzinger was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951, together with his brother Georg), of the Marian shrine in Altötting (where his parents had met and where his father went to thank the Lord for the return of his two sons from the war), and also of other churches in Bavaria, for instance the one in Birkenstein.

After watching the parade from his window, the pope thanked the German faithful “for the wonderful music that you have brought and for what you have prepared for us.  May God bless you!”

The Philatelic Office of Vatican City is commemorating this anniversary with a series of four postage stamps.  Each of them bears representations of very important moments from the life of Benedict XVI as a man of the Church, along with symbols that appear on his pontifical coat of arms.  (Sources: apic/imedia/romereports/vatican.va/VIS – DICI no. 237 dated June 25, 2011)

How cute he looked in his cardinal's cassock and zucchetto. So much better than the suit and tie. :P
