There was quite a bit of speculation that he had been forced out. Plus it fits so many of the private revelations like Ann Katherine Emerick and others. It would make sense.
Maybe he just couldn't fend off the wolves anymore and had to give in with a resignation. It seemed to come up all on a sudden.
