Saturday, October 13th - 1917
In her July apparition at Fatima, the Blessed Virgin announced that a miracle would take place in October so that the entire world may believe in the reality of the apparitions and in the great importance of Heaven’s warning.
The story is well known: a crowd of well over 70,000 people gathered in the area. They were mostly Catholics, but also non-believers, militant atheists, and even Free-Masonic government officials. A torrential rain poured from midnight on, which soaked everyone to the bones and rendered the Cova da Iria into a muddy field. Usually, in order to give blessings, God wills that we first do penance.
At midday, Lucia asked the people to fold their umbrellas. The entire crowd complied and magnificently displayed their faith and obedience. A few moments later, the sun broke through the clouds and Our Lady appeared above a small holm-oak:
“What does Your Grace want of me?” Lucia asked. “I want to tell you that a chapel is to be built here in my honor. I am the Lady of the Rosary. May you continue to pray the Rosary every day. The war is going to end and the soldiers will soon return to their homes.”
“I had many things to ask you: to cure some sick people, to convert some sinners, etc…”
“Some yes, others no. They must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins.”
Then taking on a more sorrowful air, Our Lady said: “Do not offend the Lord, our God any more, for He is already too much offended!”
“You want nothing more from me?” asked Lucia. “No, I want nothing more from you.”
Then, suddenly, Lucia cried out: "Look at the sun!" In front of the stupefied crowd of people, the sun gyrated in and on itself as if it were a fire wheel, turning various colors of the rainbow. This lasted nearly ten minutes but seemed like hours. This cannot be attributed to a collective hallucination, because the phenomenon was seen within nearly a twenty-five mile radius by various individuals.
While the sun was spinning around, the three young shepherds alone saw a vision that symbolized the three sets of the mysteries of the Rosary:
- Representing the Joyful Mysteries: Saint Joseph appeared with the Child Jesus and Our Lady. Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus were blessing the world.
- Representing the Sorrowful Mysteries: Our Lord appeared with Our Lady of Sorrows.
- Representing the Glorious Mysteries: The Blessed Virgin in Heaven was seen holding the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel.
The sun then turned blood red in color and seemed to fall from the sky and hurl itself towards the earth. Everyone believed that the end of the world had come and many cried out in horror. Then, suddenly everything stopped; and the sun returned to its normal place in the sky.
The people got up and noted another phenomenon: their soaked clothes were completely dry! The non-believers had to acknowledge the reality of the facts. The following day, newspapers, including those most hostile towards the Church, all reported on the event.
Indeed, the miracle previously announced by Our Lady took place as she said it would: the sky abruptly cleared and the sun “danced”. The people were able to look at the bright sun directly, without it bothering their eyes at all. A physician, Dr. Almeida Garrett, testified:
“Suddenly I heard the uproar of thousands of voices, and I saw the whole multitude spread out in that vast space at my feet… turn their backs to that spot where, until then, all their expectations focused, and look at the sun on the other side… I turned around, too, toward the point commanding their gazes, and I could see the sun, like a very clear disc, with its sharp edge, which gleamed without hurting the sight… It could not be confused with the sun seen through a fog (there was no fog at that moment) for it was neither veiled, nor dim. At Fatima, it kept its light and heat, and stood out clearly in the sky, with a sharp edge, like a large gaming table. The most astonishing thing was to be able to stare at the solar disc for a long time, brilliant with light and heat, without hurting the eyes, or damaging the retina.”1
The testimony of Avelino de Almeida, editor-in-chief of O Seculo, Lisbon’s anti-clerical, Masonic daily newspaper, is similar:
“And then we witnessed a unique spectacle, an incredible spectacle, unbelievable if you did not witness it; from above the road… We see the immense crowd turn towards the sun, which appeared at its zenith, clear of the clouds. It looked like a plate of dull silver, and it was possible to stare at it without the least discomfort. It did not burn the eyes. It did not blind. One might say that an eclipse had occurred.”2
Others also testified:
“It shook and trembled; it seemed like a wheel of fire.” (Maria da Capelinha)3
“The sun turned like a fire wheel, taking on all the colors of the rainbow.” (Maria do Carmo)4 “The sun took on all the colors of the rainbow. Everything assumed those same colors: our faces, our clothes, the earth itself.” (Maria do Carmo)5
Then, testimonies of when the most terrifying aspect of the Miracle took place:
“We suddenly heard a clamor, like a cry of anguish of that entire crowd. The sun, in fact, keeping its rapid movement of rotation, seemed to free itself from the firmament and, blood-red, to plunge towards the earth, threatening to crush us with its fiery mass. Those were some terrifying seconds.” (Dr. Almeida Garrett)6
“The sun began to dance and, at a certain moment, it appeared to detach itself from the firmament and to rush forward on us, like a fire wheel.” (Alfredo da Silva Santos)7
“Finally, the sun stopped and everybody breathed a sigh of relief….” (Maria da Capelinha)8
“From those thousands of mouths I heard shouts of joy and love to the Most Holy Virgin. And then I believed. I had the certainty of not having been the victim of a suggestion. I had seen the sun as I would never see it again.” (Mario Godinho, an engineer)9
Yet another astonishing aspect of the Miracle was that all of the thousands of people, most of whom were soaked to the bone and dirty from the mud, suddenly found that their clothes were dry and clean.
“The moment one would least expect it, our clothes were totally dry.” (Maria do Carmo)10
“My suit dried in an instant.” (John Carreira)11
The academician, Marques da Cruz testified: “This enormous multitude was drenched, for it had rained unceasingly since dawn. But – though this may appear incredible — after the great miracle everyone felt comfortable, and found his garments quite dry, a subject of general wonder… The truth of this fact has been guaranteed with the greatest sincerity by dozens and dozens of persons of absolute trustworthiness, whom I have known intimately from childhood, and who are yet still alive (1937) as well as by persons from various districts of the country who were present.”12
In one aspect, this is the most astonishing effect of the miracle and an indisputable proof of its authenticity: The amount of energy needed to accomplish this process of drying in a natural way so quickly, would have instantly incinerated everyone present at the Cova; and this aspect of the miracle contradicts the laws of nature radically; for, it is a phenomenon of which no one (either human or demonic) could ever have possibly achieved. Finally, many miracles of conversion, the greatest miracle which God can bestow, also occurred. Here are two examples:
The captain of the regiment of soldiers on the mountain that day – with orders to prevent the gathering of the crowd – was converted instantly. Apparently so were hundreds of other unbelievers, as their testimony will show.13
“There was an unbeliever there who had spent the morning mocking the simpletons who had gone off to Fatima just to see an ordinary girl. He now seemed paralyzed, his eyes fixed on the sun. He began to tremble from head to foot, and lifting up his arms, fell on his knees in the mud, crying out to God.” (Father Lourenço)14
A number of other cases of cures and conversions are documented in, among other places, the following books: Documentação Crítica de Fatima and Fatima from the Beginning.15
Though it seemed much longer, the great Miracle of the Sun lasted for nearly ten minutes. Many more official accounts of the miracle have been documented and recorded from the masses of people present, all of which verify this incredible manifestation of the authenticity of the entire Fatima Message.
When the sun returned to normal, Lucia was placed on the shoulder of a man in the crowd and carried safely through the masses to the road. As she was moving past the people, she cried out to them, pleading one of the most important themes in the Fatima Message: to convert, return to God and to flee sin. Her exact words were: “Do penance! Do penance! Our Lady wants you to do penance!” However, Frère Michel states that in Portuguese this does not mean performing mortifications, but rather “being converted, returning to God, and fleeing sin.” Through this plea, Lucia was reiterating the sorrowful request that Our Lady had made to humanity in her final apparition: “Do not offend the Lord our God anymore, because He is already too much offended.”
Thus, the Miracle of the Sun, witnessed by over 70,000 people, concluded the cycle of the apparitions. Yet the Message of Fatima, with its great depth and scope, was to continue to be unfolded to the eldest of the three seers, Lucia. In the years to come Heaven’s Messenger would be visited and, as promised by Our Lady in the July apparition, would be instructed to reveal Heaven’s peace plan for a turbulent world: namely, the reparatory devotion of the Five First Saturdays and the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Still, in order to better understand the great significance of Our Lady’s October visit, let us briefly consider the apparition in three particular aspects: the words of Our Lady, the Visions seen by the children, and then the Miracle itself.
THE MESSAGE
On this sixth and last visit, Our Lady’s words to Jacinta, Francisco and Lúcia were, “I want a chapel to be built here in my honor. I am ‘Our Lady of the Rosary.’ Continue to say the Rosary every day. …. People must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins.” Then, growing sadder, “They must not offend Our Lord any more for He is already too much offended.”
“I want a chapel to be built in my honor”
This refers back to the visit in June when Our Lady told Lúcia, “Jesus wishes to make use of you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart…” In this, she states clearly that it is Our Lord Jesus Christ who wants to establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart. Note the word, “establish”: for it is only by the authority of the Vicar of Christ that devotions are “established”. The laity does not establish devotions nor do they grant indulgences to them. Thus, Our Lady and Our Lord ask for the obedience of the Pope. She is asking the Holy Father to lead his flock to devotion to her Immaculate Heart as a sure remedy in the coming trials.
“I am Our Lady of the Rosary”
These are fighting words! By identifying herself as Our Lady of the Rosary, (especially during October - the month of the Holy Rosary) the Blessed Virgin indicates her intention to do as she has done before, to fight and conquer heresy and drive it out by means of her Rosary. As with the Albigenses, who disdained her and predictably disdained life as well, so it will be with the modernists who infest the Holy Church now. As it was at Lepanto, so it will be soon, those who seek to destroy Christian civilization will be vanquished. We have her word on this!
“Pray the Rosary Every Day”
At every visit, from May onward, Our Lady stressed the necessity of the daily Rosary. She did not spend time on pleasantries, did not thank the children for being there (as in false apparitions) she did not even get into the finer details of how we are to pray the Rosary. Simply, “Pray the Rosary every day!” Therefore, we conclude that it is impossible to comply with Our Lady’s Message if we fail this small but essential step. When people say, “I am not interested in the Rosary”, we must try to help them see that this is the very reason they absolutely must pray the Rosary! Our Lady told Blessed Alan de la Roche, “Know, my son, that a probable and proximate sign of eternal damnation is aversion for, luke-warmness and carelessness in saying the Angelic Salutation…” Distaste for her Rosary is an indication of danger; a warning that a soul is drifting from the true path.
“People must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins”
The Message of Fatima is clear on this point: God’s justice is deeply offended by our sins. While He is infinitely merciful to those who sincerely repent, His Justice demands that His children confess their sins and repent them. It is a great tragedy that those deepest in sin lose their awareness of their plight. They become so inured in their sins that they are unable to repent, and thus, the most Merciful Virgin calls to us, her children, for our help; to pray the Rosary and offer reparation, beseeching her Divine Son, Who will come to be our Judge, to grant us the graces to repent our sins. We must do this!
Our Lady’s requests for the First Saturdays of Reparation and for the Consecration of Russia are logically included in this repentance and reparation. For when we have strayed, the remedy is always by way of humble and contrite obedience. Make no mistake; it is certain we will not get the humble, contrite and obedient Pope and Bishops we need until we ourselves become more humble, contrite and obedient by adhering to the Message of Fatima!
“They must not offend Our Lord any more for He is already too much offended.”
Who among our Church leaders will heed these sad, pleading words of Our Lady? In her Memoirs, Sister Lúcia recounted, “The words most deeply engraved upon my heart are those of the request made by our Heavenly Mother: ‘Do not offend Our Lord and God any more, for He is already so much offended’. How loving a complaint, how tender a request! Who will grant me to make it echo through the whole world, so that all the children of Our Mother in Heaven may hear the sound of her voice! “ (Frère Michel de la Sainte Trinité, “The Whole Truth about Fatima – Vol I”)
Our Lady’s final words on this visit bear repeating: “They must not offend Our Lord any more for He is already too much offended.” Almost immediately after this sixth visit, just as Our Lady predicted, Russia did fall to satanic control by way of the Marxist revolution. Because the Popes had become political, they did not fight this danger with the spiritual means they had been given, but chose to respond with worldly measures, thus fighting fire with gasoline. So, from the time of Pope Pius XI on, the spiritual darkness of the Vatican increased, by small increments at first but accelerating more and more, until the avalanche set off by Pope John XXIII’s shocking disobedience.
The greatest effect this disobedience had on the Church (and thus, on the world) was to advance the suppression of the Fatima message. At the time, most people began to take less interest in the apparitions and the message. For if the “Holy Father” did not think it appropriate for the Church’s needs, then it must not be good to pursue it, or so the general impression went.
And so, the spoken Message from Our Lady of the Rosary on this October visit was to re-emphasize the absolute necessity of devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the daily Rosary; combined with a heartfelt desire to amend our lives, to make reparation for sins, and to seek the conversion of sinners.
If this portion of Our Lady’s request had been heeded, especially by the Pope who was informed of Our Lady’s words at this visit, that is, if the Pope (at this time the elderly Benedict XV and then Pius XI) had taken this up and begun the institution of Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as Our Lady asked for, the rest of the Fatima Message, that is, the three-part Secret, would have easily been accepted; which in turn, would have acquired for the Church the special graces necessary to avert the Second Vatican Council revolution. As we look back at the very beginnings of the Church’s response to the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, we see that the seeds of dissent were there almost from the start.
The Vision Seen by the Children
In her Fourth memoir, Sister Lúcia recounted: “We beheld St. Joseph with the Child Jesus and Our Lady robed in white with a blue mantle, beside the sun. St. Joseph and the Child Jesus appeared to bless the world, for they traced the Sign of the Cross with their hands.” “When, a little later, this apparition disappeared, I saw Our Lord and Our Lady; it seemed to me that it was Our Lady of Sorrows. Our Lord appeared to bless the world in the same manner as St. Joseph had done.” “This apparition also vanished, and I saw Our Lady once more, this time resembling Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.” (Fatima in Lúcia’s Own Words: The Memoirs of Sister Lúcia)
In this quick series of visions, we see again the emphasis on the Rosary. The first stage of the vision shows the Holy Family and represents the Joyful Mysteries. In the second stage, we see Our Lord and Our Lady portrayed as Our Lady of Sorrows. This vision represents the Sorrowful Mysteries and emphasizes Our Lady’s role in these mysteries. The last stage of the children’s vision represents the Glorious Mysteries, with Our Lady robed in the habit of Carmel and extending a brown scapular to them. To any faithful child of Mary, it is clearly a request for us to take up the scapular, her “little habit” in order to save our souls.
After this sixth apparition, the children took up the requests of Our Lady in this vision: Francisco specialized in the consoling, contemplative path (especially to the “Hidden Jesus” in the Tabernacle); Jacinta took the apostolate of self-sacrifice, applying her sufferings joyfully to save sinners from hell, as had the Little Flower of Carmel, St. Therese, before her. While Lúcia herself took both parts, entering Carmel, consoling Our Lord, and offering adoration while suffering greatly for love of the Sacred Hearts and the salvation of souls. We have been prevented from knowing the richness of her beautiful life by the ancient enemy which for the moment controls the narrative, but if you are attentive in your Rosary, it is possible to learn much. We do well to invite St. Lúcia into our devotions, for she loves to teach and is especially favored by Our Lady of the Rosary.
The Great Miracle of the Sun
By her stunning Miracle of the Sun, Our Lady of the Rosary graciously provided our weak and doubtful natures a clear and vivid proof of her power over the forces of nature. In this astounding feat, she proved that she is more brilliant than the sun and that the sun, along with all the laws of nature, obey her commands.
The lesson for our day is even more astounding, but was not much noted at the time. The field of the Cova had been ploughed and then had gotten utterly drenched in a steady downpour. Thousands of people and their horses and donkeys had packed into it, sinking into the ankle-deep mud. Everyone was literally soaked to the bone and their shoes and clothes caked with the mire. it was not possible to be in that place, at that time and not become befouled by the mud of the pasture mixed with the filth of animal waste. Yet after Our Lady’s Miracle, the multitudes found themselves and the muddy Cova now dry, with no mud on them. This is a promise to us, especially now, for these times.
The Sun, a Figure of the Church
In prophecy, the sun is a figure of the Church. The sun, like the Church is something we were accustomed to as a certainty, unfailingly dependable. In the Fatima miracle, the sun began exhibiting all the colors of the rainbow. Now, the rainbow is a Divine sign, given to us by a loving Father. Yet today this beautiful sign – the rainbow – has been co-opted by diabolical forces to corrupt the Church, thus offending God even more. When Our Lady performed this stunning miracle, she was affirming her control over these pernicious forces. She knew that the significance of the rainbow colors would be overlooked by Catholics at that time, but it is obviously a sign to us as we watch the ilk of the Lavender Mafia prance about in their rainbow vestments while they seek to entrench their perversions in the practice of the faith.
The Immaculata, Mother of Mercy, spared the crowd's impending annihilation; and in the flash of an instant, restored the sun and eradicated all of the mud and filth. And she stands ready now to remedy all the errors that plague the Church. She alone can restore the Church to its rightful place and cast the filth from the Church, restoring all things in Christ the King.
As an ominous darkness closes in, edging us each day toward nuclear annihilation; and as false shepherds arise who are leading so many astray toward the enslavement of world globalism, we must now take complete refuge in the Immaculata; and resolve to simply do what Our Lady asks of us all.
